LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - In mid-Michigan, lead can be found in many homes and sometimes in the water we drink.
Sunday marks the start of lead poisoning prevention week, spreading awareness about the dangers of lead exposure.
In 2021, Michigan ranked 3rd in the nation for elevated lead exposure in children. Organizations along with state and local governments are doing their part to reduce and prevent exposure. Understanding bright futures begin, lead-free.
âLead poisoning prevention week is important because it puts a focus on these potential hazards in our homes,â said Nishaat Killeen, Senior Project Manager with MichiganSaves.
The #1 source of lead hazards is dust from lead paint from homes built before 1978. Ingham County, 70% of lead-poisoned children live in homes built around that time, and as of 2024, there is no requirement for a lead inspection.
