Right now, with just days to go before the end of 2024, police are hoping to keep the number below 200.
"It's still too many for our city, but it is also a great reduction from last year which was also already on top of a 20% reduction," Worley said.
Police told 11 News the city has had 195 homicides so far this year, including 12 juveniles. At this time in 2023, there were 257 homicides. The year ended with a total of 262.
Looking at nonfatal shootings, police said 404 occurred this year, down from 617 last year.
Worley said department reforms of regaining trust with the community, Mayor Brandon Scott's Group Violence Reduction Strategy and collaboration involving the federal and state law enforcement partners have had a strong impact on crime.
