Not Everyone Is Benefiting From Drops in Overdose Deaths

Drug overdose deaths fell by an estimated 14.5 percent from June 2023 to June 2024 — the most significant decline recorded in the 21st century. When I first heard the news, however, I was saddened.

The Opioid Overdoses Surveillance report revealed that Black people in Arizona experience an opioid overdose fatality rate of 32.4 deaths per 100,000 people. Nonfatal overdoses also occur at a higher rate for Black Arizonans than for other groups, at a rate of 67.7 per 100,000 people.

In 2010, white persons had the highest drug overdose death rate yet by 2020 Black persons had the highest rate (see Figure 4).

Overdose deaths in Monroe County rose by more than 25% last year compared to the year before, according to an annual report.

According to the county, there were 512 overdose deaths in 2023. That continues a three-year trend of increase from 346 in 2021 and 406 in 2022.

The medical examiner says opioids and cocaine were responsible for most of the deaths.
