LOUISVILLE, Ky. â There were 123 fatal shootings in 2024 prior to this weekend, according to the Louisville Metro Gun Violence Dashboard.
"To be at 123, knowing that we are just days away from a new year, somebody is bringing in the new year minus a family member," said Krista Gwinn, the mother of two children who were shooting victims. "It's not OK."
Krista Gwynn and her husband Nevada are the parents of Christian Gwynn who was shot and killed in 2019. Their daughter Victoria was involved in a fatal shooting in 2021, but she survived.
"There's 123 more families that are feeling just like us," Nevada said.
The 124th victim of a fatal shooting this year was found dead inside an Okolona home early Saturday morning.
The data shows that in 2024, 129 people have died from bullet wounds. Including non-fatal shootings, there are 488 total victims from gun violence in the city.
"As we hear the numbers â every number is another stab, another jab, another red stain on the shirt," Nevada said.
Christopher 2X is an advocate for gun violence prevention.
"There's not been a break in that trend in at least five to six years," Christopher said.
He said numbers aren't anywhere near pre-pandemic levels. Data revealed the number of shootings was well below 100 until 2020.
"If you stay at 100-plus a year, that's a hard conversation to have about how things are getting better," Christopher said.
In 2024, there have been four less shooting fatalities than the year before.
Christopher said there's still much more work to be done, and it starts with the youth.
"That magnetic pull of street life is appealing to a lot of young individuals," Christopher said.
