President William Ruto has called on East African Community (EAC) member states to unite in support of Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
Speaking during the 14th edition of the EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa, the President lauded Odinga’s wealth of experience and unwavering commitment to Pan-African ideals, terming him the ideal candidate to lead the continental body.
“Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, is vying for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission. His vast experience, dedication to pan-African ideals, and commitment to fostering integration make him an excellent candidate,” President Ruto said.
He urged the EAC partner states to rally behind Odinga, emphasising the collective benefits of his leadership.
“His leadership will give East Africa a stronger voice on the continental stage, enabling us to champion our shared priorities, protect our interests, and accelerate Africa’s development agenda,” Ruto said.
Odinga, who launched his AUC campaigns and manifesto in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, last month, is vying to succeed outgoing chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.
At the upcoming Mjadala Afrika Leadership televised debate on December 13, 2024, at the African Union headquarters, Odinga will face stiff competition from Mahmoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti and Madagascar's Richard Randriamandrato.
President Ruto’s appeal for regional unity came as he reflected on the significance of integration and collaboration within the EAC.
Having recently assumed the chairmanship of the Summit of EAC Heads of State in Arusha, Tanzania, Ruto highlighted the critical role of solidarity in driving the region’s shared goals.
“The camaraderie and competitive spirit on display here reflect the values that underpin our collective vision for a united, prosperous, and peaceful East African Community,” he remarked, referring to the ongoing games in Mombasa.
He also emphasised the broader purpose of the games, which bring together leaders from EAC member states, noting that they provide an opportunity to foster mutual trust, strengthen bonds, and discuss pivotal issues such as economic integration and trade.
Odinga’s candidacy symbolises not just Kenya’s aspirations but also the EAC’s commitment to working together to address Africa’s challenges and promote development across the continent.
With support from EAC nations, Odinga’s journey to the helm of the African Union Commission could mark a new chapter for regional and continental cooperation.
