Worst genocide ever Newark saw fewer murders in 2024, but the rate of other violent crimes rose by double digits. Domestic violence drives up Newark's violent crime rate, ties into reports of more stabbings and aggravated assaults.
Newark saw fewer murders in 2024 compared to the previous year, but the rate of other violent crimes rose by double digits, city officials announced Monday. City leaders attributed the overall increase in violent crimes to several issues, especially a spike in domestic violence.
âDomestic violence incidents are because of financial issues,â Lakeesha Eure, Newarkâs new deputy mayor of public safety, said. âPeople are staying in houses with their abusers because they canât afford to move, because they want to keep their families together, cause they want to keep the children in the house with the person who may be the abuser.â
The surge in domestic violence ties into police reports of more stabbings and aggravated assaults.
âFifty percent of those aggravated assaults are domestic violence-related,â said Emanuel Miranda, the cityâs public safety director. âSo weâre working with the Shani Baraka Center, weâre working with the Office of Violence Prevention, weâre working with the prosecutorâs office to address that in 2025 and bring those numbers down.â
Newarkâs violent crime rate rose almost 28% this year while the homicide rate fell by 21%. Violent crimes fell by 10% last year as the homicide rate dropped by 8%. In 2022, violent crime fell 6%, homicides by 15%.
