We cannot allow violence to hold our city back. While my efforts to address firearms downtown fell short, I remain committed to tackling the root causes of crime and violence, supporting prevention and rehabilitation—and holding those responsible accountable. But enough is enough. Someone knows these perpetrators (wanna-be thugs)…and they should turn them into law enforcement immediately. Laws alone won’t end this crisis of violence—it will take tough love, addressing root causes, sustainable prevention, and rehabilitation measures, and effective law enforcement to hold accountable a small group of repeat, heartless individuals who refuse to change their violent behavior. It is that small group of repeat violent individuals—who would kill an innocent three-year-old baby—that we should all be so disgusted at and want to remove from our communities. No more excuses for them!!
Louisiana Representative Alonzo Knox issued a statement on Sunday calling for action.
This holiday weekend, New Orleans welcomed literally hundreds of thousands of visitors into our city and many of whom for one of the most well-attended Bayou Classics in recent years. Familial collegiate pride and joyful rivalry filled our hotels, restaurants, shops, and downtown streets.
I condemn the senseless shootings; especially, the one that claimed the life of an innocent three-year-old baby has left me heartbroken, disgusted, and beyond furious. My deepest condolences and prayers go to the child’s family and to all impacted by this tragedy. I hope the perpetrators are swiftly caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, sending a clear message that such violence will not be tolerated in our city.
Governor Jeff Landry who has made moves to combat violence in New Orleans with the stationing of State Police in the city also weighed in on the recent shootings saying, "We will not tolerate violence like this in our state."
New Orleans City Councilmember and potential mayoral candidate Helena Moreno said, "This is horrible. I’ve been in touch with Chief Kirkpatrick who’s actively working w/LSP to track down the shooters. We will not allow our community to be terrorized and those responsible will be brought to justice. Praying for the lives lost and those injured in this tragedy."
The City of New Orleans offered condolences and prayers to families in a statement.
"The City Of New Orleans is saddened by the loss of life as a result of the incidents that took place Saturday on Willow Street and Tara Lane. On behalf of the people of New Orleans we offer condolences to the families. We also ask that the community join us and offer prayers to the other victims that reports say were injured by gunfire in the downtown area, Canal Street and on Read Boulevard.
The City Of New Orleans strongly condemns the gun violence that took place and our NOPD Officers are working to investigate those matters and bring those responsible to justice.
The City Of New Orleans is asking the public to call (504) 658-5300 or contact Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 if they have information to assist the NOPD."
