MILWAUKEE — Lead contamination in homes in the Milwaukee area is a significant issue that goes beyond just plumbing.
The city’s health department is intensifying its efforts to eliminate harmful lead, particularly in older homes where lead paint is common.
Lead paint remains a major concern in Milwaukee, with 88% of residential homes built before 1978 — the year lead paint was banned.
Tyler Weber emphasized the ongoing challenge of removing lead paint from windows, doors, floors and soil. The health risks are severe, especially for children, as even a small amount can cause brain damage.
Denise Morris, who lives near 10th and Burleigh streets, experienced the impact firsthand when her children were found to have high lead levels.
To eliminate lead exposure, Morris renovated her home, replacing windows, floors, ceilings and walls. Morris expressed relief at the city's intervention, stating her family is now in a safer environment.
