The recent decline in overdose deaths hides a tremendous disparity by race: Deaths have fallen only among white people while continuing to rise among people of color, according to a new Stateline analysis of federal data.

Overdose deaths in Monroe County rose by more than 25% last year compared to the year before, according to an annual report.

According to the county, there were 512 overdose deaths in 2023. That continues a three-year trend of increase from 346 in 2021 and 406 in 2022.

The medical examiner says opioids and cocaine were responsible for most of the deaths.

Life expectancy — the average number of years a person can expect to live from the time of their birth — dropped dramatically, from 82.6 years in 2019 to 78 years in 2020. This represented the biggest and fastest drop in lifespan in a century.
