Throughout his presidency, Biden has emphasized the need to restore trust in institutions and has made a point to stay at an armâs length of the Justice Department, vowing to remain independent even on issues relating to his son. As Hunterâs legal woes played out, Joe Biden and his top aides repeatedly told the public that under no circumstances would he pardon his son. Even after Donald Trump won the presidential election, White House officials, including Jean-Pierre, said Hunter would not be pardoned.
Democrats on Monday began more forcefully criticizing President Joe Biden for pardoning his son Hunter Biden, saying that heâs giving his son special treatment and further eroding confidence in the rule of law.
Just hours after Biden pardoned his son, Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan called it âan improper use of power.â Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, a frontline Democrat, said Biden âmade the wrong decision. No family should be above the law,â while Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado said it âfurther erodes Americansâ faith that the justice system is fair and equal for all.â
The public denouncements of the sweeping pardon lays bare that Democrats are willing to break with the president over the pardon even as the White House on Monday forcefully pushed back on the criticism.
White House defends Biden over Hunter pardon
The White House on Monday defended Bidenâs decision to pardon his son, Hunter, and argued that the presidentâs dramatic public reversal on the matter did not undermine his credibility or the independence of the Justice Department.
