End of life care
I have no doubt that those who back the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill do so from the best of motives and with a genuine wish to assist those individuals whose quality of life is â or may become â so poor that they would prefer an assisted death. However, I donât believe that they fully appreciate the adverse effects the Bill will have on many patients and the limitations of the proposed safeguards.
Many terminally ill patients already feel acutely pressured by guilt at the burden they are placing on their family and the NHS by continuing to live.
The mere fact that a doctor or relative mentions the option of an assisted death may well make them feel that they ought to choose that route. The difficult process of deciding what course to take is likely to cause distress to patients and to their families and, since family members may hold differing views, will sometimes lead to disputes which will add to that distress.
