BY THE NUMBERS: Report reveals high cost of homicides in Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. â
The Birmingham Peace Makers are hoping city council will agree to provide financial support to the organization's efforts of fighting gun violence.
BPM is a faith-based group which spends time in the streets of the West End community, praying and building rapport with citizens by listening, learning, and loving. The mission is to support anti-gun violence outreach programs and initiatives.
Peace Makers began in January 2017. In a report given to the Citizen's Advisory Board, it lists the compound cost of a homicide shooting.
Figures were cited from the National Institute for Criminal Justice reform.
Compounded costs between the city, county, and state total $805,000.
It's broken down to six categories.

- $5,200 EMT/trauma center
- $45,200 gunshot surgery
Criminal justice
- $6,000 police investigation

- $37,960 pre-trial incarceration
- $436,540 prison placement
Victim Support
- $2,500 coroner's office
- $7,000 victim of crimes
- $18,768 receiving social service benefits
Lost Revenue
- $75,000 income tax revenue
- $27,000 sales tax revenue
