With a murder occurring Monday morning, the City of Jackson reached 100 homicides investigated by the Jackson Police Department in 2024.
Chief of Police Joseph Wade made the announcement at a press conference in his office.
"Unfortunately, it's a discussion I don't like having," Wade said. "I'm here again on another Monday morning talking about violence in our capital city, and what resonates with me is that it was during a Thanksgiving holiday period."
Three homicides occurred since Friday, Nov. 28, with a shooting inside a barber shop the day prior, Thanksgiving Day.
Monday's murder now brings JPD only nine away from equaling the amount of homicides investigated in 2023 â 109. That total does not include homicides that occurred in Jackson handled by the Capitol Police or the Hinds County Sheriff's Department, Wade said.
By the end of October, the Capitol Police had investigated six murders in Jackson in 2024, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations was investigating one more, so there have been at least 107 Jackson homicides in 2024.
