Gilbert Atomic Energy Lab
âAtomic Energy Lab.â That just sounds like a cool, fun, and perfectly safe toy for any kid, doesnât it?
Yes, we know that America did things a little differently back in the 1950s, but when Santa leaves a toy that includes a sampling of âradioactive ores,â including Uranium 238, Houston, we have a problem.
While this toy was discontinued decades ago, there is good news. If you still have one you can pass it down to your grandkids and their grandkids: the half-life of uranium is roughly 4.5 billion years.
Gilbert, for those of us born after the 50s, is also the company that brought us the Gilbert Glass Blowing Kit,which could blow "glass bubbles" at a temperature somewhere between 600 and 700 degrees Celsius. Then there was teh Gilbert Kaster Kit Jr., which helped young boys cast their own toy soldiers out of molten lead, which could lead to lead poisoning, and possibly permanent brain damage.
