INDIANAPOLIS â Two men showed up at Eskanazi Hospital just before 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 29. Police say the men had stab wounds and later died at the hospital.
Around the same time, IMPD responded to a fight in the 800 block of North High School Road. Police say the two incidents are connected.
The two men who died at the hospital now added to a list of more than 200 homicides in 2024.
Reverend Charles Harrison with the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition works to reduce violence in the city, but he says homicides keep going up.
"It's frustrating, because this now is the fifth year in a row that we have seen 200 plus homicides in the city. The last nine years we have seen record breaking violence in Indianapolis. And I think a lot of us who've been doing this work for a long time are concerned at least about the trends," said Rev. Harrison.
There have been a high number of homicides in Indianapolis this year, but the city has actually seen less homicides compared to last year.
In 2023, there were 216 homicides in Indianapolis. As of Dec. 29, there have been 205 in 2024.
"Two hundred-plus homicides a year seems to be the new norm. So we certainly have to find a way to address that so we can dramatically bring these numbers down, but we just haven't been able to do that as a city, particularly over the last five years," said Rev. Harrison.
Rev. Harrison says anti violence groups are trying to address the root causes, but there are still challenges.
"There's not enough groups to cover the whole city anymore," said Rev. Harrison. "We got to do better. I think we have to do better as a city. I think people need to do their part when there are arguments and they happen to be there to try to be peacemakers."
